It's a chilly night in winter, and Anwar steps out of the house he shares with eight family members and into the commotion of the market in Sukkur. Wending his way past makeshift shops and other carts, he dodges blaring traffic and sets his cart at his usual spot.
As the only bread earner for a family of nine, Anwar spends his days out and about, selling chips. He doesn't earn much to fill the stomach of his six children and wife, Rehana, who is expecting their seventh child.
With no accessibility to family planning or better health facilities, he and his wife kept producing children one after the other. When it was time for Rehana to deliver their seventh child, he took her to a lady doctor who had a private practice. She advised him for Cesarean Section and asked him to submit PKR15,000/- for the procedure. Anwar had already spent PKR10,000/- on checkups and medicines of his wife.
With no money left, he sought help from one of his neighbours and close friends, Aslam, who works at PPHI Sindh's district office in Sukkur. He advised him to visit PPHI Sindh's BHU Plus Newpind and avail free services for delivery, postnatal care and newborn care.
At BHU Plus Newpind, Community Midwife (CMW) Erum Channa, checked Rehana and admitted her for Normal Vaginal Delivery. Few hours later, Rehana gave birth to a healthy boy and was tended to properly by the skilled birth attendant (SBA). She was provided quality postnatal care.
Anwar was happy that he had one more son to be proud of without spending any money but he also learned that too many child bearing can be expensive and dangerous for him and his wife, respectively. He wilfully gave his consent for inserting a PPIUCD.
"My wife and I trust PPHI's CMW Erum completely, she helped my wife in bringing our baby boy in the world and took time to talk to us and counsel us," Anwar said. "There was never an instance where she didn't know what to do and how to communicate with us. CMW Erum provided us with ample information about the family planning choices too."
