PPHI Sindh has initiated a number of kitchen gardening practices at various OTP sites & Health Facilities operating under the project EU-PINS program. District Tando Allahyar alone has 5 Health facilities where kitchen gardening has been initiated. OTP site GD Masso Bozdar is only one of these OTP sites where kitchen gardening has been initiated to promote kitchen gardening among the communities.
Mr. Saddam who is working as a sanitary worker at GD Masso Bozdar established this garden with various fruits, vegetables and trees. These include Tomato, Sapota, Cabbage, Lemon, Aloe Vera and Pomegranate. Today these fruits and vegetables have become an important source of nutrition for the auxiliary staff of this OTP site and their families.
Although Mr. Saddam was initially appointed as a sanitary worker at this GD, but he is very keen on working hard. In addition to his routine job, he is especially invested on growing fruits and kitchen gardening. Some of the trees that have been grown here are Moringa tree, Papaya tree, Lemon tree, Aloe Vera, and Date tree. These trees are internationally renowned for their nutritional, medicinal and skin-care related properties.
In trying times of food insecurity and a global pandemic wreaking havoc on supply chains associated with food and nutrition, such projects should be seen as a ray of hope in fighting malnutrition along with providing awareness and advocacy regarding best practices associated with kitchen gardening and home gardening.
